Shell

I hide my head
not for embarrassment, not for shame, but
for something that is too lofty to clarify
to my lower species

Slowly I crawl
to wherever I’m needed
or where I feel needed
perhaps a little bit of both

How one becomes a low-maintenance creature
is not by intelligent design
but through the evolution of maturity;
The riggers of life slow us down
so that we move like molasses
but it doesn’t feel worth it
until we beat that sticky hare

I hope I did this right; I found an article on turtles in the news, and it inspired me to write a few stanzas about them.
